Hi Joan. I really liked the medieval maidens series. Please could you think of doing one more so there is one for each season? To my mind,Stitching Renaissance is spring, Renaissance Rose is summer and Castle Princess is winter. I wish it was possible to come to some of the big craft shows. They must be amazing! Best wishes from Australia. Linda

Hell0! I am a long time fan of your work and i just wanted to let you know how much you are appreciated! Stitching a couple of your pieces got me through my divorce.
I have been searching high and low for a copy of “Angel of Cross Stitch” and can’t seem to find one. Any suggestions on where to look?

I have been a lifelong fan of your work for as long as I’ve cross stitched which would be about a good 25-30 years or so. I am so glad that you finally have your own website so that I can see what new works you have put out. I don’t do much cross stitching anymore for the last few years but do collect alot of your cross stitch stuff that interests me. Keep up the good work doing those cute designs!

    Hi Judy-
Thanks so much for your lovely words. It’s wonderful to hear that you’ve been following my work for all these years. Time certainly does fly by! I have been busy getting the last bits of my latest book together which hasn’t left much time for new posts. I’ll be writing an update and some news in a few days or so once, my models are well on their way to the publisher.

    Dear Joan,

thanks for this blog. It’s Anna from Malta. I’m looking forward to see what new things/designs you’ll be able to create. I had written to you once about the renaissance ladies. I’ve been able to get hold of the 3 charts and i’m very glad about that. My only problem is that i can’t seem to find the time to finish my current project and start these charts. But i will someday and somehow!! In fact i’ve left the walls quite empty at home so that i’d have space to hang x-stitch designs. I hope this works. However, thanks for your beautiful & detailed charts. I’ve stitched one of your christmas charts i.e. the decorating snowman and i loved all the colours and details there were in it. Please, keep the good work!!!!

    Dear Joan,

I’m also a big fan of your work– in fact, both my mom and I bought copies of your Oriental designs book, and I’ve done several from it. I especially love the 4 Chinese Elements group, & my daughter picked out the peony in the jade vase for me to make for her. There are two types of designs I would love to see from you: Celtic and angels. Any chance of either of those? Thanks, Sharon from Upstate NY

    Hi Sharon-

Wonderful to hear from you! I have lots of angels out there, mostly for Christmas, and then a whole series on the more whimsical side that you will see in my book A Woman’s World in Cross Stitch. I did do a Celtic Angel design and two Celtic saying that are available as kits from Design Works Crafts (see link in Supplies & Resources) and there will be a new Celtic piece in a book I have coming out in late December of this year.

Hey there. I was just wondering if there was a place I could find the cat wallhanging from The World of Cross Stitching magazine issue 137. By the time I received the newsletter saying it was out, I rushed to the bookstore to get it and it was no longer on stands. I love your cat designs. I also recently saw an afghan? with a variety of cats on it in The Stitchery catalog. Is this going to be available anywhere else? Thanks so much and keep up the GREAT designs!! I love your work and can recognize it anywhere!! I buy your annual stocking and Easter bag designs in The Cross Stitcher magazine every year!! I also have several books and have recently finished stitching the baby set you did for Cross Stitch and Needlework magazine with the wash mitt, hooded towel and wash cloth. It came out adorable!! Thanks again!!

Hi Melissa- Thanks for your kind words. It is wonderful to know my designs are being received so enthusiastically! The cat wall hanging was done exclusively for the magazine, but I hope to put it into kit form soon. I also plan to learn how to sell charts through either my blog or website this summer. The trick is finding the time to learn how to do it. For now I suggest you email the World of Cross Stitching to see if they have a back issue they can sell you. The other cat piece that you saw in the Stitchery catalog is available as a kit. It can be made up either as a picture or an afghan. You can contact the kit company, Design Works Crafts by clicking their link on my Supplies & Resources page.

I love all of your work, so its kind of hard to say what I want more of. :) The first piece of yours that I saw was your “Elegant Assisi” from CrossStitcher (UK) #198. I fell in love with it instantly and would like to see more work like that. Thanks for all of your wonderful and beautiful designs.

    Hello Joan!
Just wanted to tell you I’m working on another of your designs. I finished the kit of HOUSE RULES for friends of mine in only two weeks and am now doing HELP WANTED from your book. They are so much fun to do that I can hardly put my needle down long enough to eat, sleep or do chores.
    I really love your style.
For an other idea: My mom used to sing a song to me and I sang it to my childeren when they were small about a fieldmouse that made a bicycle out of a nutshell and rode it down a hill. But his tail got caught in the wheels and the wallnut crashed. The fieldmouse ended up at the bottom of the hill with the walnut bicyle on his tail… We all loved to sing the song.
Thanks for your inspirational designs. I really love doing them!
    Happy stitching!

    Hi Joan!

    From New Zealand!

I absolutely love your designs and have got to the stage now that when I look at something in a magazine and really like it before I see the designer’s name – it is usually one of yours!

Your Fairy Godmother hangs above my bed – the sentiment “may all your dreams come true” is still hopeful! And I am working on Home is where the cat is. The trouble is, I don’t have enough time for all your designs I want to do – even though I am in my 60′s and retired! Am still so busy with so many things. I shall have to retire again!

Looking forward to ALL your fabulous designs!

I just bought your new book “Bewitching” and love it. Now I just need to find the time for all the stitching. LOL Have you ever thought of designing a Gypsy Lady with flowing hair and flying skirts and ribbons and a tamborine in her hands ??? I can close my eyes and see her in your distinctive style. LOL My mind does wander but alas I am not as talented as you.

Hi Joan, I am desperately trying to get hold of your Medieval Lady designs published in CSC in 2007. I have managed to get one from Issue 145 and have just been outbid on Issue 147 at GBP20.00 (yes that right USD30). It is so hard to get the designs. I can’t wait until I can buy from you direct and while you are looking into setting that up can you please bear in mind to use Paypal as I find that a lot easier to pay with being in Australia and then being able to download the charts direct – how great that would be and no more struggling for a last minute bid on ebay!! I love your Bewitching Cross Stitch book and a colleague at work and I are both stitching designs. I am doing the Wizard and she is doing the dragon – a bit of a competition you see. I haven’t used beads before but I like a challenge and love the colours in your designs. I’ve signed up to the newsletter now so I can’t keep in touch with all of your new projects. Keep the designs coming Joan. All the best from Oz :-)

I love your two new designs on the new charles craft fabby. I’ll have to wait quite awhile to get them though. My wish is to get your bewitching book. I’ve started getting the Cross Stitch Collection magazine so I can get a selection of your work. Our latest magazine here is the release of Spring Fairy which is gorgeous. I have been stitching for over 25 I always look out for your books and your designs in the cross stitch magazines. You have such a unique style I can spot your design a mile away! Having just visited China in January, I am planning to stitch the serene Buddha to match the photographs of the real 30m high gilt statue we saw over there! I plan to scrapbook it then in my far east album.

I am also a big fan of your fairies, they have such lovely faces andd a joy to stitch. I started a new subscription to CSC after I saw her, but thanks to their mess up I missed out on the issue 167 where your lovely spring fairy was featured! Unfortunately they have now sold out! Do you know id there is any where I could purchase the chart from?

I’m a big fan of lists- that’s why HOUSE RULES and HELP WANTED appealed to me so much, I guess. Would love to see what you do with some of my lists, like “6 rules to a tidy house”. Hi Joan…I want to thank you for all your lovely xs designs. I’m a huge fan and I love ‘the ladies’ whether Angels, Princesses or whatever. I have completed Angel of the Winter Snow[?] and Snow Princess and they now hang in my bedroom. I’ve had so many comments on them and lots of ooohhhs and aaaahhhsss.

My husband passed away last year and I threw myself into my xsing as it helped me cope with his loss. There are so many of your designs that I want to do but so little time to do them in.

Unfortunately I am unable to afford to purchase any new magazines as I’m on a very, very, very limited budget so I just work on the ones that I do have. I would like to see more of the ladies with their beautiful long gowns and I would like to see more of the ‘head pieces’. No on seems to do ladies with the ‘cones’ on their heads and yet they look beautiful. Please consider that.

But thank you for filling my days with enjoyment…God Bless…Eva in Manitoba Canada

Hi Joan, I have come up with a tip for your next designs. I’ve stitched the cross stitch fairy from WOXS 100 and I’m now halfway through her companion, the cross stitch angel from “A woman’s world”. Since I can knit (with poor results, I must say) and I’ve recently taken up patchwork classes which I’m enjoying a lot, I wondered wouldn’t it be nice to have also a patchwork and a knitting angel/fairy to go with the cross stich ones?
I keep my fingers crossed to see them soon…and I hope you don’t mind my requesting them :O)

I love your designs. I really would like to do your angel of cross stitch. Does it really have over 300 colors in it? I also want to do it on 11 count instead of 14 do you think that would work? Also, at one time I saw a Tshirt with the design on it. Do you know where I would buy one?

In cleaning out a multitude of boxes of “stuff,” I ran across an ad that I had planned to order the chart for the “Angel of Cross-Stitch”, ANGELXS. It looks like this was around 2002. Now that I have retired, maybe I can tackle this design. Lord knows I have the DMC colors, 5 storage trays full. Thank you. Marjoe

Hi, Joan I am love with your Oriental designs and am stitching Oriental Grace at the moment. I have seen that there is a second design called Oriental Wisdom which I have brought but in an advert in a stitching magazine, I saw a third design called Oriental Beauty (it is mostly in blue and has waves in the bottom right hand corner) However, I can’t seem to find a kit of it anywhere! Do you have any suggestions of where I should look please?

    Dear Joan:
Hope things are well in your part of the world.
I’ve noticed something, in every comment in this site, everyone of us has a
distinctive small box, mine is green with white symbols , as white cross stitches and diamonds etc. Is there a possibility that these pretty boxes might be charted? I would like to stitch it. Let me know if you have the charts . I would possible frame it in a big frame, or better, make a miniature quilt. I like the later best, Yes, a miniature quilt. ( I never quilted before) but, this would be my first, I am excited. mmmmm!! I like green, but my favorite colors are, all the purples and hues of lavenders. another mmmmmm! just yummy!! I also love, adore the idea from Dusty Spencer, The Gypsy, and Ms Latino and the cupcakes and candies in the wintertime, I have a hand painted canvas with little houses and cupcakes and gum drops in the snow.
Mmm dream dream. I love your work. Period.

    Hi Joan,
I would like to buy the same fabric you use from Polstitches to stitch your Summer Geisha and the Water and Fire Goddesses but I was unsure about one thing. I have sensitive skin so I always rinse out my fabrics before I stitch and then my framer washes them when I’m done to get all my wrinkles out. Do you wash your fabrics at all, and do the colors stay fast? I’m not looking for a guarantee, just maybe hearing from someone who has had a positive experience. The web site says to dry clean only and I know that isn’t possible with the wrinkles I get in things. Thank you, Janice

In one of your posts, I noticed that you mentioned a “stitched simulation” from your “design file.” What is this, and does it come on your software? Hi Julie-
The Celtic Angels have a stitch count of 242w X 186h. I used 28 count evenweave for the design. The fabric I suggested was Polstitches English Rose 28 count Jobelan but you could use any other eveneweave or Aida you like. Finished size if the design is 17.5 w X 13.5h inches and I would allow at least 2.5 inches all around so the fabric should be at least 22.5 X 18.5 . I don’t think they carry Polstitches fabrics but you could have a look at English Rose on Polstitches website (www.polstitchesdesigns.co.uk) and then see what 123 has that best matches, or of course choose what ever color you like. I see 123 Stitch has two hand dyed 28 count Jobelan colors from Wichelt that may work well called Bittersweet Lite and Pink Dahlia.

I agree, 123 Stitch is a great site. They are lovely to work with and have always been prompt and courteous when I order from them.

      With all best wishes-

I hope to some day soon get the time to take on such a project. Since I have been designing for so many years it will be quite a task gathering everything. I wish there were a few more hours in every day to work on this. I have a few of my older charts in the works for presentation as chartpacks and hope to get them finished soon. In the mean time you can check out Design Works Crafts (http://www.designworkscrafts.com) and Imaginating (http://www.imaginating.com) on the internet where you will see some of the kits that I have available although I do not think Design Works has my name on the charts on their site. P.S. I’m waiting with baited breath for the arrival of my copy of “rose goddess!”

I don’t sell the books but the publisher told me they would be in Barnes & Noble and JoAnns around the end of the month. I’ve looked in NYC and surrounding area but have not seen them yet. Others are finding them at these stores and at Borders in different parts of the US.

The book is sold out at the myfavouritemagazines website but it is still being found in the UK at WH Smith’s. It seems to be in a lot of places in the US now. I even managed to find it here on on the East Coast and friends in California and the MidWest are finding it in JoAnns, Barnes & Noble, and Borders. It’s in the magazine section with the other cross stitch magazines. It should be arriving in other countries outside the UK in the next week or so. Sorry they have not given me other specific shops to name outside the US. Please check my post on the contact information at Future Publishing if you would like to contact them directly.

I haven’t heard of anyone else attempting to do a chart with all 400+ colors. It would certainly be a challenge, not only to design but with all those symbols, to make it clear enough to stitch from :-) A real ‘tear your hair out’ sort of project!

I purchased DMC Light Effects 677 instead of regular 677 it’s going to make her face very sparkly but she will look unique is the way I looked at it. I did attempt the backstitching but one of the outer leaves is very crooked so I will likely pick it out after I do the cross stitching and redo it so it can look closer to the design. I also ordered the Rose Goddess and most of her supplies. Am not comfortable with seedbeads yet so they may be omitted until I get used to them then add them on…

    Hello Joan,

I just wanted to tell you that I enjoy seeing your designs in the different Cross Stitch Magazines I get from the UK. You’re such a very talented designer. I love your fairies, mermaids and angels, and of course your christmas designs are always amazing. If I had even a tiny bit of that talent in my little pinky finger, I would certainly have something special. I was just wondering if you have ever done any Egyptian Designs or if you had ever thought of making any. I think you would be fantastic at creating some of the Gods in cross stitch. I’m sure there are many who would love to stitch something like that from you. I would certainly love to see your interpretation of Egyptian life or scenery. Just a thought.

Anyway, keep up the great designs, I can’t wait to see what you come up with next! Cheers and Happy Stitching!

    Dear Joan,

I don’t know how to contact you elseway, but I think there is a problem in the chart I bought from the Earth Godess. I bought the full kit at Polstitches and stitching on it allready.

It seems 2 symbols are missing on the color key, and one is used a lot I think. The first thing I noticed is a blank symbol next to the color 938 in the color key. In her eye is a little symbol aswell that isn’t showing up on the color key. To me it looks like a black box with a white “-” in it. That one isn’t in the key.

Also, under her top, where the skirt starts is a black square, with a white “X” in it. This isn’t showing in the colorkey either.

I made pictures of it, but I don’t want to upload them because of the copyright issues.

    Thanks in advance,

    Love, Babs

I have the Iris fairy but she will be done on gray 14 count. I also started the Rose Goddess but am only on the outline in braid I haven’t gotten to the face yet. I find it is easier to concentrate on either one color or commit to a set number of stitches per night to move them along. Hello from Vienna in Austria (NOT Australia!)!
One year ago I learned stitching in Morocco and back in Austria I was wondering if there are some lovely designs in cross stitching because in Europe we mostly stick with the traditional Christian motives which are not my types.
Then I bumped into your amazing books at Amazon.com and suddenly the bright colours, the lovely motives and my mind became totally addicted with your works.
Now I have all of your books and still trying to get all the magazines with the fairies.

I just saw the four small Christmas angels you did for the card magazine last year. Are they available in a chart pack yet, or when will they be?

My only wish is that your designs were more accessible in the US. I cannot afford the UK magazines and being disabled, I can’t get out to search for individual copies or bookazines. I do have a dear friend in the UK and she has been very indulgent of my needing a JE fix!

I was out and about this weekend and bought 2 real peacock feathers with the Peacock Lady in mind. If I can figure out how to attach them to the project she will really stand out! They are fragile so I had them wrapped in paper while I see how to do that…

I have seen the book here in the US at Barnes & Noble but I couldn’t say where to get them in Canada. I see that they are sold out in the UK and on Amazon. I do not think there will be another printing. Sorry I can’t be of more help.

I have been getting your books and patterns from the cross stitch magazines and have stitched several of your fairies. Did you ever design an Orchid fairy? I have the daffodil, iris, lilly and rose fairy. I am so addicted to your designs as the details, especially on their faces are just unbelievable.

Hi Marilyn- A very long time ago I did an illustration of a beautiful, exotic orchid lady. When I started doing these portrait designs, I dug it of my work closet because I loved her so much because I wanted to get that same beauty in the new designs. I might just have to turn her into a design for cross stitch now. :-)

I just tried to order 10 patterns at jelliott@earthlink.net they tell me this is not a good address and throws me into an attempt to purchase a site on earthlink, is there a different direction I can take to get these patterns, thanks Jean Moe Alabama,USA

    Good Afternoon, Ms Elliott,
Several years ago, I purchased a cross stitch magazine and saw your Christmas angel sitting at a desk with a Christmas List. I tore out the picture and the instructions. It advertized that the pattern used 360 different flosses.
Over the years, the instructions separated from the picture and when I recently uncovered it, I realized that now I had the time to begin the project.
I was looking for it over the internet and purchased a cross stitch book by you since it was advertized that the pattern I wanted was in the book. Not so.

So I appeal to you to tell me how I can purchased this pattern. I haven’t yet located it on the internet. Kind Regards, Dorothy Savok

Hi! I know you get this all the time but I heart, heart, heart your designs! They are all so exquisite. You have quite a following here in the Philippines although it is so hard to get your designs here. I have several of your books and a few magazines and it is quite a feat to obtain them. For example, I ordered Fairy Enchantment from Amazon and I had it sent to my fiance’s mother. She will be the one to post it to me here in the Philippines. The book will travel around 7000 miles to get to me so you can just imagine my excitement! I wish there’s a way to get them easily here. Postage costs twice as much as the book/magazine itself. I want to collect all your patterns. I even listed down almost all of them and from what magazines they’re from. I hope I can achieve this! Kudos to your work and I will order chartpacks from you once I have saved enough money to buy all of them. :)

I love to make a Christmas-type design every year for my grandchildren to have in the future from their childhood.
Now, I’m dying to see your Rapunsal design, ‘cos I know 5yr. old Addison will expect it to grace her walls along side the Spring Fairy! Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Rosemarie

I finally got the Charles Craft fabric that has your adorable dragon pattern in it! I think I will use the sparkly Aida to make two of your mini Christmas angels from the card magazine into small wall hangings. Now I just have to save up for the Charles Bright Aida so I can get the mermaid pattern! I have a number of your books and finding the time to do everything on my list just of your designs will take me years! Thank you for all the great designs and “dreaming time”!

I got almost all the flosses and braids needed for Mother Moon and Father Sun. I also got your Mother Goose chart and am assembling what it needs now. I am working on one of your other older designs Geisha Girls I didn’t realize it was yours til I looked at the designer name I had gotten it and its required flosses and fabric a while back. My mommy likes geisha girls so I have one in the works by another designer and also yours. She gets whichever one I finish first. I also have your Indian Brave he is being stitched on needlepoint fabric with no. 5 perle cottons, flosses where there isn’t any perle.

Design Works Crafts is one of the kit companies I work with. I’ve been working with them for 25 years. I license designs to them so that people who prefer kits can still enjoy my work. You will see a number of things from my books and chartpacks available in Design Works kits. The main difference in the kits is that in order to keep the price down they use white Aida and can only use gold and silver metallic threads. If you know my designs from the magazines or chartpacks, you know how I love using Kreinik threads with all the wonderful colors available. To distinguish the kit from the chartpacks, Design Works often uses a different name for the design.
